New Media Predictions
By Jerry Del Colliano (With my daughter, Daria and Colin Huber at my recent Media Solutions Lab) Last Thursday my Media Solutions Lab was held in Scottsdale and I have never been more proud of the radio, music and new media businesses as I was that day. An impressive mix of executives and entrepreneurs attended and for the better part of seven hours worked actively with me on tracking the digital future. We had fun. Taught each other and worked in small groups. On issues, strategies and skill sets. I thought you would be interested in a few of my 15 predictions about where the media industry is headed: Advertisers will increasingly go directly to the consumer and bypass radio, television and publishing. We see signs of it happening right now with some local radio advertisers in Grand Rapids using podcasting to deliver the message. The podcasting campaigns are coming out of radio budgets. Not major yet, but a trend. On a national level, Pepsi is doing a multi-million dollar program to be based on their website and using viral social networking to do a local community outreach, once the exclusive domain of local radio. Pepsi is giving away millions in...

Dr. Johnnie Fever on "Broadcast Audio Series IV On Air Board"
Up for sale is a partially restored broadcast audio series 4 broadcast quality stereo audio mixing board. the board has 3 stereo line or mic switchable inputs per a channel by 12 channels. there are 3 stereo output buses, 1 mono bus, and 1 cue bus. it has full switchable metering. the board uses P&G linear Faders. the board matches up to professional 4dbu 600 ohm balanced line equipment. I have a huge plastic bin measuring 22"x13"x13" full of spare parts. and a power supply of a different brand made by RKE that requires rebuilding or modification to get the needed +/-30VDC +12VDC power. i have cleaned up all the modules in the board gone over the electronics and refinished the wood. all this board needs is the correct power applied to it and probably a few minor repairs to make it fully operational again. it looks great inside and out. i can't imagine too much being wrong with it when power gets applied. as with all old electronics though no warranty is implied or given.

Listeners to Ross's Saturday show fall below 3m – and Chris Evans audience also shrank in last three months of 2009As the BBC prepares to say farewell to Jonathan Ross, the latest listening figures have revealed that his BBC Radio 2 show is not the force it once was.Ross's Saturday show, which is now pre-recorded after he prompted a series of controversies with his on-air comments, had an average weekly reach of 2.94 million listeners in the final three months of last year, according to Rajar figures published today. This was marginally up on the previous quarter, when Ross's show had 2.92 million listeners, but down on the 3.08 million it had in the last three months of 2008, when many of the programmes were hosted by guest presenters after Ross was suspended for three months without pay following Sachsgate.Ross's latest audience is more than half a million fewer than the 3.5 million who tuned into his Saturday morning Radio 2 show at the end of 2004.The presenter will leave the corporation in July after announcing he would not be looking to renew his contract, which includes his BBC1 chatshow and film review series as well as his Radio 2 show.Chris Evans,...

Extreme Makeover (Not!) - Radio Edition
FCC adopts 307(b) “Tribal Priority”, other incentives for Native American radio proposals, but defers overhaul of basic 307(b) analysis
As we reported back then, in April, 2009, the Commission issued a sweeping set of proposals designed to re-vamp the AM/FM allotment processes. The overhaul seemed primarily intended to instill order into the chaos that had become (and largely remains) of Section 307(b) analysis.A crucial secondary aim was to stem the seemingly inexorable movement of radio stations out of rural areas and into more densely populated areas. After devoting the first half of its Notice of Proposed Rule Making to those proposals, the Commission used the second half to toss in a laundry list of far less ambitious suggestions.
On February 3, the Commission issued a First Report and Order and Further Notice of Proposed Rule Making in which it grabbed the low-hanging fruit but declined – at least for the time being – to take on the more complex and controversial Section 307(b) issues. The primary beneficiaries of the changes that were adopted will be Native American Tribes, for whom the Commission has tried to clear a path toward easier acquisition of radio stations on tribal lands.
Here’s the scoop. Changes in Overall Section...

FCC to offer Native Americans "Tribal Priority" in radio
The agency says there are just 41 radio stations located on the 55 million acres of tribal lands in the U.S., and to improve that situation, it’s modifying some rules now and proposing additional ones. The immediate rule changes apply to the AM band, such as forbidding the downgrading of an AM that’s won at auction with the new Section 307(b) bidding preference. That would keep a winner from accepting an inducement from a third party to reduce the signal. There’s a Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking seeking ideas about whether to “extend the Tribal Priority to tribes that do not possess native tribal lands.” The full order to “promote Native American radio and streamline broadcast radio assignment and allotment procedures” is here.

Vanity Fair can't find one up and coming actress of color in Hollywood?
Zoe Saldana may have co-starred in two of the biggest films of the year -- Star Trek and Avatar -- while Gabourey Sidibe has been everywhere from Oprah to the Golden Globes on the strength of her performance in Precious. But Vanity Fair couldn't find a single actress of color to place on its cover depicting the hottest young faces in Hollywood. Given that Mo'Nique is considered a strong favorite for a Oscar win in Precious, this seems kinda wack. (H/T to Richard Prince's Journalisms). And while some note that Saldana appeared on the mag's March 2008 cover, Mediaite notes that two actresses on the new cover also appeared on a young Hollywood cover later in 2008: Amanda Seyfreid and Kristen Stewart. This also seems much more about the magazine's demographics than Hollywood's. Covers are mostly enticements to buy the content within for people editors imagine as their target audience. VF seems to think none of its readers will plunk down the cash for its Kenneth Cole and Tag Heuer ads if any of the women on its cover are darker than calamine lotion. Who would you have put on the cover? I don't know film as well as TV, but...
