Cumulus Cares

By Jerry Del Colliano I get how the major consolidators want to dilute local radio in favor of a cheaper national platform. And how they see hundreds of their radio stations serving as cheap price point delivery vehicles for major advertisers like Home Depot and Wal-Mart. I get it, but I don't like it. It's shortsighted and eventually destructive to the radio industry. But what I don't get is the mean gene that the three leading unemployers in the radio industry possess. Take Cumulus. Please. So terminator Gary Pizzati arrives at a sales meeting in Fayetteville, NC Wednesday morning. You may remember Pizzati who, according to accounts from some Cumulus employees, doesn't burden himself with Dale Carnegie human relations techniques. But on that morning, Pizzati was apparently reborn as Tony Robbins. The sales staff reportedly sat in amazement as Pizzati tried his hand at reassuring the nervous employees assembled. Pizzati told the sales meeting in Fayetteville that they need to have passion for their work ... their company ... their homes ... their neckties! That's right, one person insists he told the males that they need to consider their neckties turning his visit into a necktie party of sorts as you'll...

Arbitron removes two "media-affiliated" diaries from the Fall Atlantic City quarterly book

A revised set of numbers will be available after 10am today. As usual, Arbitron is circumspect about revealing the situation, and says only that “audience estimates for WTKU and WMGM may be substantially affected in particular demos and dayparts.” There shouldn’t be an inference that WTKU/WMGM owner Access.1 Communications was involved in anything improper. Also, neither classic rock WMGM (103.7) nor classic hits “Kool 98.3” WTKU had unusual spikes in the book that was delivered on January 11. As today’s T-R-I Newsletter reports, the three-book 12+ AQH share trends are 3.5-3.1-3.8 for WMGM, and 3.1-3.6-3.6 for WTKU. Atlantic City is Arbitron market #141 and gets two books a year, Spring and Summer. The Atlantic City numbers on the Ratings Page of Radio-Info are here.

Bloomberg Beef-Up Reflects Growth of Profit Expectations and Competition

I’ve written previously (here and here) about Bloomberg’s expansion and eventual dominance of financial media from news to data and consumer. The WSJ reported yesterday that indeed, Bloomberg is forecasting a respectable 10% growth rate for 2010 and plans to add an additional 1300 employees. The revenue gains would come largely from a projected increase of 12,000 subscriptions to the Bloomberg Professional service, which provides data, analytics and news geared to financial-services professionals. Pressure on Chris Evans as Terry Wogan leaves breakfast on a high - from Media Guardian

Chris Evans already had a tough job succeeding Sir Terry Wogan on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show. But the task became even harder yesterday when it was revealed Wogan bowed out by matching his biggest-ever audience figures.Wogan, who left the show on 18 December after a total of 27 years, had an average of 8.1 million listeners a week in the final three months of 2009, making his Europe's most popular breakfast programme, according to Rajar listening figures. He also helped maintain Radio 2's position as the most popular station in the UK, with 13.5 million listeners, a record-equalling 16.5% share of the audience.Evans took over the show in January, to the displeasure of some of Wogan's loyal listeners or "Togs" (Terry's Old Geezers and Gals) but a generally positive response from critics. But he will have his work cut out maintaining Wogan's audience. The Radio 1 breakfast DJ, Chris Moyles, has long coveted the title of the country's number one breakfast show, but the Rajar figures show he currently lags nearly a million listeners behind the Radio 2 show.Wogan is due to return to Radio 2 on 14 February with a new live Sunday morning show. Tim Davie, the BBC's...

Tampa PBS chief Dick Lobo appointed to a post in the Obama Administration

The White House announced today the appointment of Dick Lobo, president and CEO of Tampa PBS station WEDU-Ch. 3, to head the International Broadcasting Bureau -- the government department which runs Voice of America and the broadcast outlets aimed at Cuba, Radio and TV Marti. Lobo, 73, still must be confirmed by the Senate, so he may not be leaving Tampa soon. But the executive, whose wife Caren spearheaded fundraising for Barack Obama in Florida during the 2008 election, will eventually leave for Washington D.C. if confirmed, working under the Broadcasting Board of Governors. Last year, Lobo announced plans to retire from WEDU seven years after taking the reins at the then-troubled station. He had already come out of one retirement to help the Tampa outlet past a fiscal crisis, having spent the first 40 years of his work life at commercial network
TV affiliates in New York, Miami and Chicago. WEDU has hired an executive search firm to help with the process. This latest appointment isn't entirely new for Lobo. Back in 1994, he was appointed by President Clinton to run the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which oversees Radio and TV Marti. Radio and TV Marti regularly faces criticism from political...
