Cecil Heftel vs. Radio Consolidators
By Jerry Del Colliano (With my wife, Cheryl to the left and my old friend Dick Carr and his wife, Phyllis) The radio industry lost another legend a few days ago when owner/politician Cecil Heftel passed away. It seems a lot of radio legends are leaving us lately or is it just that there are too few legends-in-the-making visible in the dark ages of radio consolidation? What made Cecil Heftel special is that he loved radio. I’m not sure he was all that good a businessman. The Hawaii congressman didn’t post profit margins the way consolidators did before they started messing with local radio. Heftel bought and sold his stations impetuously at time – too quickly, too cheaply. But Cecil Heftel knew what it took to put excellent local programming on-the-air and the necessary promotions that had to go along side with it. Cecil’s philosophies worked on many successful stations including KGMB and KGMQ/Honolulu, KIMN/Denver, 13Q and WSHH/Pittsburgh, Y-100/Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Kiss/Boston, KEZK/St. Louis, WLUP/Chicago, KLVE/Los Angeles, WAMR-FM/Miami. I asked my friend Bill Tanner, the outstanding radio programmer who worked for Heftel, to contrast the mindset of Cecil Heftel and others of his second golden age of radio compared to the carpetbaggers...

Presenting the "Ed Wood Award for the Worst Radio Station Website"
What's the worst website for a radio station you've ever seen?
I mean something so mind-numbingly bad that it threatens to tear at the very fabric of space/time.
Here's your chance to nominate some candidates. Just make sure you provide your reasons (i.e., don't assume those reasons are self-evident).
This is not intended as a deep-dive into a bubble-bath of negativity. Rather, it's a learning opportunity. Sometimes the best way to go right is to see what it means to go terribly wrong.
So what's the worst (and please provide the link)?
The tension is building! Oscar-schmoscar! Who will win the Woody?
Nominate by comment below. If we get some worthy candidates, we'll vote later. And please don't email me the toxic URL's directly.

Adam Boulton: ‘I want to see them going at each other' - from The Independent
Never mind James Cameron and his nine Oscar nominations, Adam Boulton did the whole Avatar thing years ago. I learn this after pointing at a life-size cardboard cut-out pinned to the wall of the Sky News political editor’s cupboard of an office across the street from the Houses of Parliament.

Radio is Shrinking as a Source of News
As the Internet becomes a more important source of "news when you need it," all traditional media - including radio - are becoming less important sources. So says this survey. This is another way of saying that if you're in the news business, you are necessarily in the business of getting the news to your audiences their way, not yours. Thus, any news-oriented station really needs to assess what fraction of its resource commitment is devoted to its digital strategy versus its over-the-air strategy. Make sure you allocate with your future in mind, assuming you intend to have one. Note, of course, that news needs and the needs fulfilled by Talk Radio are not the same. Does this suggest that Talk stations can be online powerhouses for news while still over-the-air powerhouses for Talk? Why yes, yes it does.

Legendary broadcast consultant Frank Magid dies at 78
He was justly famous for his work in giving television news a more contemporary look starting in the mid-1950s, and sometimes dubbed “The News Doctor.” But Magid (“MAG-id”) had a major effect on the radio industry, too. He was an early strategizer about the FM band, urging AM operators to seize the opportunities on FM. And many of the consultants he hired to work with radio station clients later became prominent on their own, after they left Frank N. Magid Associates. That list includes Bill Moyes, Jon Coleman, Fred Jacobs, Doug Jones, Bruce Fohr and Bob Harper. Magid kept his company based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, though he died in Santa Barbara on February 5 at the age of 78. Cedar Rapids TV outlet KCRG has more, here.
