FCC Okays More Body Scanners

Action adds more time, more quantities to 2006 waiver
Just two weeks after affirming a 2006 waiver for body-scanning security devices, the FCC has now extended that waiver by another year and upped the allowable sales by another 200 units.
The action coincides with news reports that the Transportation Safety Administration is increasing the numbers of body scanners at U.S. airports in response to security threats, including an individual who allegedly smuggled explosives aboard a U.S. aircraft in his clothing last Christmas.

Undercover Lew

By Jerry Del Colliano After the Super Bowl on CBS Sunday night was a new show called Undercover Boss where corporate CEOs get into the trenches with their employees to find out what working for their company is really like. It was the most-watched post Super Bowl show since 2001 according to the overnight ratings. In episode one, Larry O’Donnell, CEO of Waste Management, went undercover to find out, among other things, what cleaning latrines is like. As The Wall Street Journal put it: “In the pilot episode, the president and chief operating officer of Waste Management, Larry O'Donnell, helps an upbeat, smiling employee as he cleans out port-o-lets at a carnival ground. The third episode shows 7-Eleven Inc. Chief Executive Joe DePinto working on an assembly line making donuts. His voiceover reminds viewers that the convenience store chain has expanded its fresh-food offerings. Mr. DePinto says he saw the series as "an opportunity to showcase our people, our stores and the things we're known for." Now, this isn’t really a reality show. No one gets fired, bitten by a poisonous snake or has a girlfriend named Snooki. And there is no doubt these big firm CEOs wouldn’t subject themselves to...

Howard Stern addresses the American Idol rumors: "There's not a better job on the planet"

At least he says there’s not a better job than judging an “f-ing karaoke contest.” Stern tells this morning’s Sirius show “It might be possible. We'll see.” Referring to his current oversized paycheck, Stern says “a hundred million to judge a karaoke contest? Yeah, I think I would do that show for $100 million…What a cush job: $100 million for four months. Who wouldn’t take that?” But then he plays coy, saying he won’t comment on any possible negotiations with Fox, to replace Simon Cowell. There’s more in the MTV/VH1 coverage of Stern, here.

Monday's Pile

We have a lot going on this start of the week, so we might as well go on.

Please note: our publishing schedule will still be quite sporadic, and there are days we may not be able to be here. We'll try to keep our Twitter feed going whenever possible...

THE 3001 EUCLID SHUFFLE: If this is February 8th, it must be time for the 3001 Euclid Anchor Shuffle.

More than any station in the Cleveland TV market, Scripps ABC affiliate WEWS/5 keeps rotating its anchors in and out, trying new combinations, or generally "seeing what works".

The station has its first permanent anchor schedule since long-time anchor Ted Henry left the building nearly 9 months ago, and here it is:

Noon: Leon Bibb (solo)
5 PM/Live on Five: Danita Harris and Lee Jordan
6 PM: Leon Bibb and Lee Jordan
11 PM: Danita Harris (solo)

"Good Morning Cleveland" - with anchors Pete Kenworthy and Kimberly Gill - is unaffected.

At most stations, there's at least a "main anchor team" doing either 5 and 11 PM, or 6 and 11 PM, or all three newscasts. WEWS appears to want to mix it up.

With the 11 PM anchor slot solo, Danita Harris becomes the second African-American female solo anchor in the market...with Gannett NBC affiliate WKYC/3's Romona Robinson the first, of course...

INCOMING?: OMW hears that Local TV Fox affiliate WJW/8 "Fox 8" is looking to fill the opening left behind when popular Melissa Mack headed for Boston, and a gig at CBS O&O WBZ/4.

A Northeast Ohio native, who currently toils in the Grand Rapids MI market, was spotted at South Marginal auditioning for the role over the weekend. (We'll assume she, or whichever weathercaster WJW hires, will take her place as a part of "Fox 8 News in the Morning", and cover similar duties.)

Stay tuned...

FIRST UP: ...to occupy the vacated Clear Channel talk WKBN/570 Youngstown morning drive chair this week is Mike Romigh.

Yes, that's the long-time former host at CBS Radio news/talk KDKA/1020 Pittsburgh, where now-former WKBN morning drive host Robert Mangino has landed in the evening slot.

Since leaving "KD", a quick Google search tells us that Romigh has been working for a Beaver County PA congressman, and for an economic development group based in the suburban Pittsburgh county.

OMW hears that Romigh is among those who are "up for the job", and no final decision has been made...and we don't know who will be heard in the WKBN morning slot after him...

PIONEER PASSES: There's actually a long history of Spanish-language radio in the Cleveland market, though only two non-commercial rimshot stations (Painesville's WHWN/88.3 and out-past-Lorain's WNZN/89.1) broadcast in the language full time. A number of local educational and non-commercial stations, and even commercial stations, have had such programs on weekends.

A pioneer in Latino-focused broadcasting in Cleveland has passed away.

The Plain Dealer's Cleveland.com carries the obituary for Daniel "Junior" Vargas, who died last month at the age of 71:

Junior was Cleveland's finest voice of Latino Radio on WZAK & WCSB for over 40 years. Your music will play forever!

An OMW reader tells us that Mario Ivan Benavides succeded "Junior", and that he now broadcasts "Latino International" on WCSB...

NYLA FOUND: OMW hears out of South Marginal that an apparently well-liked former presence on WJW's "Fox 8 News in the Morning" has a broadcast home.

After some time out of the media light, "Nyla" is now heard on Radio One talk/brokered WERE/1490 Cleveland Heights "NewsTalk 1490" Sunday evenings from 6-10 PM, on a program the station's schedule calls "Healing The Hurt Gospel With Miss Nyla And Daniel".

(The schedule actually has the show running until 2 AM Monday mornings, which we presume is a repeat of the live 6-10 PM airing.)

We hear that Nyla still gets E-mails at South Marginal, wondering what happened to her, so there you go...

Global Radio tightens up competitions - from Media Guardian

Capital FM owner holds additional draws after listener spots problem with multiple competition entriesGlobal Radio has overhauled its on-air competition policy after an error meant that thousands of entries for its Jingle Bell Ball contest on London's 95.8 Capital FM went uncounted.Listeners were invited to send in a text for a chance to win a pair of tickets for the live music event, held at the O2 Arena in December last year.Global Radio management later discovered that people who entered a number of times using the same mobile phone had only their first entry counted, no matter how many more texts they sent. The fault emerged after a listener who entered one of the draws about 40 times contacted the station "concerned that despite his high number of entries, he had not won", media regulator Ofcom said today. As a result, the regulator said, Global re-entered those texts which had been mistakenly excluded into additional draws. The broadcaster had since taken a number of steps to stop the problem happening again.A total of 51,093 people entered the 94 free prize draws that were affected by the fault, making a total of 196,430 entries."Ofcom welcomed the broadcaster's action in uncovering the problem, establishing its...

iBiquity hopes to broaden the reach of HD Radio with new lower license fees

Both the licensing fees themselves and the extended payment options are designed to spark renewed interest in the transition to digital. iBiquity CEO Bob Struble says “Radio is now the the last entertainment medium to convert from analog to digital.” One of the benefits from HD Radio: “incremental revenue from new digital offerings” made possible by the HD-2 and HD-3 multicast channels. Those can be leased out to third parties for foreign language or ethnic program, and some broadcasters are creating new all-sports channels, such as Penguins radio in Pittsburgh. iBiquity says there over 1,100 multicast channels on the air now. Here’s the outline of the 2010 licensing and payment program: to broadcast digitally a main channel, there’s a one-time payment in full of $10,500, or a net-30 days price of $11,000, or 12 automatic payments of $1,042 a month, for a total of $12,500. iBqiuity’s Rick Greenhut says “approximately one new HD Radio station goes on the air every three days”, and there are more than 2,000 stations in digital now.

Tim Tebow step aside; Jay, Dave and Oprah surprise with Super Bowl's most-talked about ad

Forget about Tim Tebow and abortion debates; the top attention-getting commercial from this year's Super Bowl adfest involved another high profile fight: Jay Leno and David Letterman.

Just a week or so after the two late night hosts traded bitter barbs over the ouster of Conan O'Brien, Leno flew to New York to tape a sidesplitting, totally unexpected Super Bowl commercial with Oprah Winfrey and Letterman.

The gag, reportedly written by Letterman and requiring Leno to enter his rival's stage at the Ed Sullivan Theater in disguise, was the least expected and most entertaining among a crop of mostly mediocre advertisements decidedly lacking in the two things most expected from a Super Bowl ad: humor and spectacle.

Indeed, outside of Letterman's low-tech ad, the most entertaining spots came from Doritos, which held a contest asking the public to develop ads they would pay to air during the game. The best one, featuring a toddler delivering a smackdown to a disrespectful suitor for his mom, was available online for at least a week before the game.

Most other commercials could only manage a few entertaining moments -- quite a surprise given that the hefty price for Super Bowl ads kept most of...
