26% of Americans Get Their News By Phone

By Jerry Del Colliano This is what happens when you sit back on your transmitters and towers while consumers embrace their telephones. A new Pew Research Center study indicates that over one-fourth of all Americans now read their news on their cell phones. This is major. Technology is enabling consumers to get their news when they want or when they need to have it while radio stations seem to be conceding the battle for the digital frontier. If you factor in the 40 million Pandora users, whatever listening radio stations can manage (typically one to three percent of their audiences online), increasingly available WiFi Internet streams and personal iPod-type devices, it begs the question – is radio ready for the digital future? It’s hard to argue yes when consolidators have been sitting out the Internet revolution for the past ten years while they played nice with their bankers. In that time, the world has changed. For example: Television is no longer a lock for viewers. They can access parts of Jon Stewart, episodes of “Lost” online while they ignore the pre-roll commercials and their laptops have been converted into multimedia devices. Anyone with a teenager or college student knows parents no...

CBS Radio Introduces HD 'Quadcast' in DC

Yesterday, CBS Radio unveiled the FAN Sports Network, "...the first four-channel HD Radio digital multicast station in the country." That's a mouthful. Basically, the new HD frequencies created by splitting the original frequency of WJFK-FM/The Fan in Washington, D.C. have become a "network" of sports stations in what CBS is calling a "quadcast". So, if you have an HD radio, you can now hear WJZ-FM from Baltimore on the HD2 frequency, WFAN/New York on HD3, and Philadelphia's WIP on HD4. Don't live in D.C.? Good news: all these stations are available online. Listen Now: WIP-AM, WJFK-FM, WJZ-FM, and WFAN-AM. More: HD Radio: What it is and What it is Not CBS Radio Introduces HD 'Quadcast' in DC originally appeared on About.com Radio on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at 00:36:21. MP3 File (Note:  Subscribe to all hear2.0 podcasts on iTunes here) Bob, you’re not simply a marketing guru, you’re not simply a guy from a digital agency, you’re someone who has actually been in the trenches trying to market brands to real flesh and blood people for years. Yeah, I got to do some of the early work in digital marketing at P&G and enjoyed that, but I saw a lot of my peers and my management didn’t get it and couldn’t really figure it out. We were looking at banner ads and basic emails and websites and they weren’t cutting it. We were all looking for something more and something different.  I have spent about 10 years...

More Grim Milestones for The New York Times

Ironman at Political Calculations submits: According to documents filed with the SEC in February 2010, 2009 marked another grim milestone in the accelerating decline of the New York Times (NYT). Having already seen its weekday circulation drop below one million for the first time in decades earlier in the year, we can now confirm that the New York Times has now lost more than half its Sunday circulation in its home 31-county market in New York since its circulation levels last peaked in 1993. The table below, taken from the New York Times' SEC filings for its annual reports from 1993 through 2009 for its Sunday circulation data provides the hard data presented visually in the chart above. RAIN 3/9: Given history, CRB and "willing buyer" could make for punishing radio royalty

OXENFORD: NYT FAILS TO MAKE CRB CONNECTION IN STORIES ON RADIO ROYALTIES, PANDORA’S STRUGGLE Industry attorney David Oxenford points out how The New York Times yesterday — in articles just a page apart — aired the grievances of the record industry and performers calling for a broadcast radio royalty on song recordings, and described how performance royalties nearly killed the popular (and, reportedly, beneficial-to-record-sales) webcaster Pandora (and all of webcasting, for that matter). “The article about the broadcast performance royalty (The New York Times, here) mentions that one of the difficulties in assessing the impact of the proposed royalty is that no one knows how much it will be, as it would be set by the Copyright Royalty Judges on the CRB,” Oxenford writes. “Yet the Times makes no mention of the controversy over the previous decisions of the Board in the context of the Internet radio royalties, and how such royalties almost impacted services such as Pandora.” (See RAIN‘s coverage of this story yesterday, here.) Oxenford explains that previous CRB decisions using the “willing buyer, willing seller” standard (which both the House and Senate versions of the Performance Royalty Act — the bill that would impose performance royalties on broadcasters...

'Turf War': Reality-TV backyard makeover becomes battle royale

Surrounded by helpful friends and family members, The Bee's Ed Fletcher – clad in a tux – toils at the controls of a sod-cutting machine during the early stages of his DIY Network "Turf War" backyard makeover. To be honest, I was never much for yardwork. Growing up, I mowed the lawn because I was told to, but I wasn't interested in helping my dad work in the garden or my mom plant flowers. When I became a homeowner five years ago, I accepted that it meant taking care of the yard – because Fletcher men don't pay to have done what they can do themselves (and because I couldn't afford to do otherwise). I mowed the lawn, learned to prune the roses and cut the cannas back when they turned brown in the winter. But I basically accepted the yards – front and back – as they were when I went into great debt to become a homeowner. Crabgrass invaded the flower beds, the irises overpopulated and the camellias bloomed sporadically. As I stepped onto my front porch at 5 a.m. Aug. 30, I peered at the heaping mounds of decomposed granite, bark and flagstone, the bags of concrete on my...

Proposed Broadcast Performance Royalty Back in the News - Where is It Going?

In one more indication that the Broadcast Performance Royalty (or "performance tax" as opponents of the legislation call it) is not dead yet is an article in yesterday's New York Times reviewing the issues at stake in the proceeding. What was perhaps most interesting about that article was the fact that it appeared only one page away from an article about Internet Radio service Pandora, and a discussion of how that hugely popular service was almost driven out of business by music royalties set by the Copyright Royalty Board in their 2007 royalty decision. The article about the broadcast performance royalty mentions that one of the difficultiesin assessing the impact of the proposed royalty is that no one knows how much itwill be, as it would be setbythe Copyright Royalty Judges on the CRB. Yet the Times makesno mention of the controversy over the previousdecisions of the Board in the context of the Internet radio royalties, and how such royalties almost impacted services such as Pandora. How much would the proposedroyalties on broadcastersbe? We have written before on that subject, here. Under previous decisions using the "willing buyer, willing seller" royalty standard which is set outin the legislation that has passed House...

Oscars draw average audience of 41.3-million, its biggest audience in five years. Is Twitter to blame?

ABC officials announced triumphantly today that Sunday's Oscarcast drew an average audience of 41.3-million viewers, becoming TV's most-watched entertainment program in five years. The only question left, is why? The numbers are impressive. About 70-million unduplicated viewers watched at least 6-minutes of the show Sunday. The average of 41.3-million was a 5-million boost from last year, more than tripling the Emmy awards' audience, more than doubling the Golden Globes' audience and almost doubling the Grammy awards' audience. Locally, an average of 461,000 viewers watched the show on WFTS-Ch. 28, which was about one-third of area residents watching TV at the time (Sarasota residents could also see it on WWSB-Ch. 40) Without surveys and testing, it's hard to know why people tuned in, but there's a few ideas at hand: -- Having 10 Best Picture nominees, including crowd pleasers such as The Blind Side, Up and the industry's highest-grossing film ever, Avatar, helped build buzz for the broadcast and get people invested in seeing the outcome. -- The emergence of Invictus, Precious and Blind Side as serious Oscar contenders also added a little ethnic diversity to the field, giving black folks something extra to cheer about. -- The snark-a-thons on social networking...
