Commodity Radio Kills Off Joey Reynolds

By Jerry Del Colliano WOR in New York finally succumbed to change they can count on – like literally, count the savings. They fired Joey Reynolds, the Hall of Fame broadcaster who actually entertains listeners. His show was available to other stations nationwide on the WOR syndicate. Now it’s all over as of April 2. Over the years I have found owner Rick Buckley is a good guy. I worked for him in Philadelphia. He’s a remnant of the old mom and pop radio days. Buckley inherited the company when his father died and has in a lot of ways kept it a family operation. Joe Bilotta, a guy who goes back to my days working for Buckley in Philly, is still with Rick. That says a lot. But the sun, the moon, the planets and repeater radio were all in alignment for Buckley to make the decision to let Joey Reynolds go from his all-nite perch. Reynolds has many fans and was skillful in ways a lot of personalities are not. More on that in a moment. So, when Citadel’s WABC cut George Noory’s Coast to Coast loose recently in favor of its own repeater radio brand Red Eye Radio...

Clear Channel revenues from radio dropped 10% in the latest quarter

The 10% decline in top line revenues exactly matches the industry average, as reported by the Radio Advertising Bureau for last October through December. Clear Channel also reports declines at its “Americas Outdoor” division of 1% and its International Outdoor division of 5%. The company’s fierce cost-cutting shows up in a 20% drop in operating expenses at the radio unit, and a 20% gain in what Clear Channel has always reported as OIBDAN. MSNBC Extends Its BreakingNews Brand to Facebook for an Online Trifecta

Jason Kincaid submits: Last November, MSNBC acquired the Twitter account @breakingnews, which was started as a basic newswire by Michael van Poppel and gradually grew to 1.4 million followers (it’s now up to over 1.6 million). A month later, MSNBC announced that it had acquired BreakingNews.com, which has become a web portal for the online newswire. And today, it’s managed to complete the trifecta: MSNBC has just launched a Facebook Page at Facebook.com/BreakingNews. MSNBC spokesperson Gina Stikes says that the new Facebook account will only send updates for the biggest stories to break (you can still use its other feeds if you want to receive every story to come from the service). The page is obviously still quite new (it only has 645 fans right now), but you can expect that the grow quickly. Complete Story

The First Step In A Social Media Campaign

There are lots of ways to measure the effectiveness of social media campaign, but only one right way to start. Before you start a Facebook Fan Page, or open a corporate Twitter account, the one mandatory step you need to take to be sure any of it is worth your time is to identify the key performance indicators (KPIs) of your business, and measure them first. You might use the data, you might not--but if at any point down the road you need to measure exactly how much social media engagement has added to your bottom line, you'll want to know exactly where you were when you started. A small additional expense, perhaps, but you'll thank me later, trust me. Take this recent survey for a Houston-based bakery/cafe chain called Dessert Gallery covered recently by Harvard Business Review. The company wanted to measure the business impact of maintaining a Facebook Fan page, so they first surveyed their email database to collect baseline information, and then began their engagement. After three months of constantly updating their Fan Page with promotions, reviews and other content, they resurveyed their list to measure a variety of key metrics, including Net Promoter Score, average price per...

Movie critic and newspaper columnist Richard Roeper to join Roe Conn on talk WLS, Chicago (890)

The 2-6pm afternon drive show will be billed as “The Roe Conn Show with Richard Roeper”, and the Sun-Times columnist will be a full-fledged member of Conn’s show. Roe was most recently paired with Cisco Cotto, but new Citadel GM Michael Damsky recruits Roeper for the job. Robert Feder at Vocalo.org recalls that Roeper “began on the radio as a Sunday morning talk show host on WLS in the early 1990s and eventually landed his own Monday-Friday midday show on WLS-FM (94.7) during its run with a ‘young talk’ format from 1994-95.” The common thread, then and now, is programmer Drew Hayes. Roeper will continue his newspaper column and nationally-distributed movie review work. He’s just published a book titled “Bet the House: How I Gambled over Grand a Day for 30 Days on Sports.”

IMAX’s Valuation Is in Fantasy Land

Ockham Research submits: Imax Corp. (IMAX), which operates giant screened movie theatres as well as licenses the technologies to third parties, reported an outstanding fiscal fourth quarter 2009 on Thursday morning. The company benefited from the blockbuster success of Avatar, which is arguably one of the most visually appealing movies ever made. The high screen quality as well as the ability to show 3D films was a key reason for Imax’s surging revenue in the quarter. To date, Avatar on its own has been responsible for $218 million in box office revenue at IMAX theatres. In the recent quarter, sales rose 98% to $54.2 million and easily topped analysts’ estimates of $45.3 million. Earnings came in at $.20 per share easily topping the analysts’ view of 6 cents due to the greatly increased traffic due to feature films like Avatar. In addition to Avatar, IMAX appears to have another huge blockbuster on its hands as just last week Alice in Wonderland shattered previous IMAX opening weekend sales totals. Globally, IMAX sold $15.2 mln in tickets with nearly 80% of that from US theatre locations. The success of the movie’s opening weekend sent IMAX shares more than 18% higher in three trading...

Merlin Olsen has passed away at the age of 69.
