The PPM in Canada - a report from Canadian Music Week in Toronto

At Friday morning’s “BBM/PPML Key Learnings and Challenges In Audience Measurement” session, Coleman Insights’ Warren Kurtzman previewed the company’s upcoming look at “The PPM DNA of Canada’s High Performance Radio Stations.” As in a previous U.S. study, Kurtzman found that those stations were driven by higher daily cume and by more listening occasions. Canada’s PPM rollout, while not without issues about sample size, has been less contentious than its U.S. equivalent. BBM president/CEO Jim MacLeod says that he thinks his Arbitron meters “are doing well with it, but that’s not what the press is saying,” while Kurtzman says that there may have been “unrealistic” expectations about what PPM could show. Asked about the cellphone only issue, MacLeod said that the higher cost of cellphone service in Canada made CPO a different issue there, also asserting that CPO listeners’ habits were not different than landline listeners—even at the younger end.

Susan Stanton on Larry King tonight to discuss documentary "Her Name Was Steven"

It is an odd thing as a journalist to find yourself given the cold shoulder by someone who let cameras from a world wide cable newschannel film her mammogram and sex change operation. But Susan Stanton did not return repeated phone calls and emails seeking comment on the documentary CNN created about her metamorphosis from Steven to Susan Stanton -- a film assembled after the newschannel's cameras followed her for two years. Turns out, there's not much new in Her Name was Steven that regular readers to the St. Petersburg Times wouldn't already know. That’s because Stanton, whose decision to change gender while serving as Largo city manager was revealed by the Times in 2007, has already talked a lot about the process – holding a press conference, appearing on Larry King Live and allowing the newspaper to take some of the first public pictures of him in women’s clothing as he began his transition. A CNN producer said the decision to screen the movie at film festivals across the country delayed scheduling the documentary which airs Saturday and March 14 at 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. One thing is certain; no matter how many words you’ve read about Stanton, there...

Congress seeks to boost the abilities of Radio Free Asia

Indiana Sen. Richard Lugar has introduced a bill that would provide long-term budget authority, rather than annual funding, for Radio Free Asia. It was created 14 years ago to broadcast news into nations including Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, North Korea, Tibet and Vietnam. The bill by Lugar, the top-ranking minority member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, would allow for more broadcasts, and has co-sponsors including Minnesota Senator and former Air America radio host Al Franken. Lugar’s office says the bill “would promote the free dissemination of information in East Asia through the permanent authorization of Radio Free Asia (S.3104).” A number of foreign governments routinely jam RFA broadcasts.
