The WGN Memo You Can't Ignore

By Jerry Del Colliano Robert Feder, the outstanding reporter and columnist based in Chicago, slipped Tribune CEO Randy Michaels a well-deserved stiff arm the other day when he wrote a piece on 119 words Michaels will not allow on Tribune’s WGN, Chicago. WGN News Director Charlie Meyerson was a good boy and passed along the CEOs instructions to the news department probably holding his nose as he hit send. Michaels was not subtle as he said “don’t say them on WGN”. Meyerson, according to Feder, spun it as “The real goal here is to avoid using words that make you sound like you’re reading, instead of talking — that shatter the image you’re speaking knowledgeably to one person. By not using ‘newsspeak,’ you enhance your reputation as a communicator.” Newsspeak? What the hell does a CEO – the self-proclaimed “noise you can’t ignore” know about newsspeak? Better yet, why is Michaels micromanaging WGN’s news professionals? In fact, what is he and Sam Zell doing in the newspaper industry along with almost 20 hired hands from radio posing as mild-mannered reporters for large metropolitan dailies such as the LA Times? Look, in fairness to Michaels, a lot of the phrases he doesn’t...

About Christine

We're still "away" from the Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) for the most part, though we'd been planning a comprehensive update sometime soon.

Since we've been actually sitting on this one since mid-February, and are now getting questions on it from readers, we'll let this item free early.

Yes, Scripps Cleveland ABC affiliate WEWS/5 has a new meteorologist. From a station memo released about a month ago:

Christine Ferreira will join the Good Morning Cleveland team as Meteorologist. Christine comes to Cleveland via Portland, Oregon where she spent three years forecasting mornings for KOIN-TV. Prior to that, Christine was the Chief Meteorologist at KATU-TV in Victoria, Texas, where she guided 24-hour coverage of Hurricane Rita.

Christine is a graduate of Millersville University in Millersville, Pennsylvania and is looking forward to moving back east to be closer to family in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

Christine will start at WEWS on March 1, 2010.

That, she did, and the second question is - what happened to incumbent "GMC" weather anchor Jason Nicholas?

Though he isn't on "GMC" anymore, he's still at 3001 Euclid - at least as far as we know. Though it's hard to tell with vacations and such, we believe Jason will land on the weekend editions of "NewsChannel 5".

This item on TVNewsCheck.com last week still lists Nicholas as part of the "NC5" weather team:

Ferreira joins Good Morning Cleveland news anchors Kimberly Gill and Pete Kenworthy and Chief Meteorologist Mark Johnson and meteorologist Jason Nicholas.

Then again, it was freelancer Eileen McShea we saw one recent weekday evening, subbing for Mark Johnson, not Nicholas...so we don't know how the lineup is now set...

Oklahoma City Gets Fourth Country Station as Jake FM Debuts

Ready for markets with four Country stations again? That’s the scenario in Oklahoma City where the 93.3 frequency previously occupied by Tyler Broadcasting’s KKNG (King Country), became “Jake FM” over the weekend under consultant (and former OKC programmer) Joel Folger. Jake FM is using the slogan “Oklahoma’s New Country” and is emphasizing “more new country music than any station has ever played in Oklahoma City.” Jake FM is streaming live here. KKNG was most recently running a yesterday-and-today mix against Clear Channel’s contemporary KTST (The Twister) and classic country KXXY but, as previously reported, has migrated to outlying sister signal KOJK (97.3) and returned to the classic country format that put the station on the map more than a decade ago. Users of the Oklahoma discussion board at Radio-Info.com are talking over the change here.

Saj Karsan submits:We've seen how some companies don't take quite as big a hit as do others during recessions, based on the cyclicality of the respective businesses. But surprisingly, some companies actually see business conditions improve during recessions. As an example, consider Daily Journal Corp. (DJCO), a publisher of specialized information services. The company trades for $96 million, but has no debt and cash and marketable securities of $64 million. His reporting coverage included drug trafficking and organized crime. Montesinos, who was 51, becomes the second Radio America reporter to be killed in the past nine months. Cable Programming Exclusivity Ban Survives Appeal . . . But For How Long?

Split D.C. Circuit panel sidesteps First Amendment argument, upholds FCC prohibition . . . THIS time The U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit has affirmed the 2007 extension of the Commission’s prohibition against exclusivity arrangements between cable operators and cable-affiliated programming networks. But the likelihood of that prohibition staying on the shelves beyond its current sell-by date (i.e., 2012) is dubious. For more than 15 years the FCC has prohibited exclusive contracts between cable operators and cable-affiliated programming networks. The prohibition was triggered by the Cable Act of 1992, which reflected Congressional concern about cable’s monopolistic position in the realm of multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs).But Congress was not inclined to let the FCC engrave the prohibition in stone.Au contraire, Congress included a sunset provision essentially causing the ban to go away automatically in 10 years unless the FCC made an affirmative finding that the prohibition continued to be necessary to protect competition and diversity. In 2002 the Commission made such a finding, leaving the prohibition on the books for another five years. And in 2007, when that extension ran out, the Commission renewed it for another five years. That’s when Cablevision and Comcast, two of the biggest MVPDs, asked the Circuit to...
