FCC Launches "Spectrum Dashboard"
Graphic database allows searches by frequency, location, name, or licensee category. The FCC has released its “Spectrum Dashboard,” a graphic-interface database of frequencies and licensees from 225 MHz to 3700 MHz.(Check out the graphic to the left, which is a partial screen grab of the "Browse Spectrum Bands" function of the Dashboard at work.)You can search by spectrum band, geographic area, licensee name, or FCC licensee category. Although very much a beta release, and limited in scope of spectrum, it is fun to play with.If you like that sort of thing. And we know some of you do.

Radio Is In Play For Gordon Gekko
By Jerry Del Colliano “The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bullshit. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal”. -- Gordon Gekko. Over the weekend I re-watched Wall Street for a little escapism -- the Oliver Stone 80’s movie starring Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen. This diatribe (above) by Douglas playing Gordon Gekko, the corrupt and heartless Wall Street speculator kind of reminded me of the radio industry. So much for escaping the daily reminders of a radio industry destroyed at the hands of Wall Street greed. But there it was. On the screen. Less than ten years after the movie debuted, radio consolidation began. What many thought was just a figment of Stone’s imagination actually predicted the mess that was to follow for the country and for the media industry. Twenty-three years later, look what we're left with. Wall Street --...

Just a reminder that all Video Programing Distributors — which includes broadcast television stations – mustidentify a contact person for closed captioning issues, both immediate issues and general complaints, and file that contact information with the FCC by March 22, 2010.As we’ve discussed previously, new FCC closed captioning rules recently went into effect that require video programming distributors to establish a contact for handling immediate closed captioningconcerns, as well a contact for receiving written captioning complaints of a general or non-time sensitive nature. In order to assist viewers and potentially facilitate the resolution of such captioning complaints, the rules require that video programming distributors publicize the appropriate contact information and also provide theinformation to the Commission, which will maintain a database open to consumers. Accordingly, by March 22, 2010, television stations must designate a contact person, post the necessary contact information on their web site (and in any phone directories the station may advertise in), and submit the information to the FCC. The best way for stations to file this information with the FCC is to visit the FCC’s Web site and submit the information online. Radar Love: 239 Million Tune In to Radio Weekly
Every quarter, Arbitron releases its RADAR report on national listening habits and trends. Of course, the high points are usually released as teasers for the full report, which is what this post is all about. The initial numbers shared by Arbitron are indicative of some serious Radar Love! Don’t take my word for it though; here is what RadioInk had to say: Radio reaches more than 239 million people 12 and older in the course of a typical week, reports Arbitron, citing its upcoming RADAR 104 network-radio ratings. Listening to the more than 7,200 RADAR-affiliated stations is at 219 million in a typical week, up from 212 million a year ago in RADAR 100. Leaps like that are great for whetting the industry appetite for the full and detailed report coming on March 22. It is also always good to have fresh numbers to show to those who continue to deny radio’s relevance. For instance, I am quite sure we will see these stats brought up in Congress during the debates surrounding the Performance Rights Act (PRA), although probably not by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). RadioWorld distills it down to one easily digestible percentage: Arbitron says that despite...

Houston's KTEK (1110), sold for $7.8 million in 2008, goes back to Salem for $3.7 million
The just-filed deal includes the cancellation of BizRadio’s 2008 loan from Salem, now estimated to be worth $1.26 million. Salem is also getting $800,000 in cash. But BizRadio will be allowed “purchase airtime for programming on certain stations” owned by Salem, according to the purchase agreement. HBO series trailers: David Simon's Treme, Martin Scorsese directed Boardwalk Empire
Is it possible to have too much quality TV in your life? HBO's The Pacific has just started a bold and bloody run, FX's Justified brings Elmore Leonard in the sticks to life tonight, AMC's Breaking Bad returns to new episodes on Sunday and the day after that, Showtime's Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara return with jolting new seasons. But all of that pales in comparison to the next sentence I'm going to write. There's a trailer for The Wire creator David Simon's new HBO series. Called Treme and focused on events three weeks after the flooding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, the trailer shows lots of cool stuff to look forward to when the show debuts in April -- criminally under-used actors Wendell Pierce (The Wire) and Khandi Alexander (The Corner, CSI: Miami), totally cool actors Steve Kahn and John Goodman, lots of New Orleans-style jazz, a cameo from Crescent City music legend Allen Toussaint, amazing visuals of a still devastated town and.... Well, I don't want to go too fan boy on you here. I first saw the trailer on writer David Mills' most-excellent blog, Undercover Black Man. David, a former newspaper journalist, escaped the biz...

ericcorwin on "Is “The Dow Jones Of Pop” Music UP? Or, DOWN?"
Originally posted on Jaye Albright’s Breakfast Blog Chris Molanphy pens a great read that everyone who picks songs for radio airplay really needs to ponder. “Like the Dow Jones Industrial Average — which signifies the health of the U.S. economy for millions of people who understand little about what the Dow means or how it works — the Hot 100 has been around long enough to become both a fixture and a shorthand for the current state of U.S. popular music.” I agree with him that “airplay-heavy charts are deadly. That’s the situation we had in the early 2000s, when iTunes hadn’t been invented yet and the labels had killed off the retail single.”Sadly, he needs to look deeper than his hypothesis of so-called “tyranny” that radio is “The Chief Executive” which undermines a good chart. Too often it’s promotional tactics manipulating radio in pursuit of album sales due to their higher profitability to the label which drives the chart and thus lacks “… checks and balances: the Congress that is the consumer.. (You also need a supply of good songs, obviously, but there’s not much a chart can do about that.)” Stations (and labels) which ignore their own listener-driven research...
